The term CPD has lost it's meaning. 

  • CPD has become synonymous with the mundane box ticking.
  • CPD has become synonymous with going through a list of topics that now appear to be lacking meaning and something that needs to be done to get minimum time.
  • CPD has become synonymous with making sure these boxes are ticked so that the compliance bodies can be kept happy.
  • CPD has become synonymous with repeating this same courses year after year adding nothing additional to one's skills, abilities or growth.

    Ironically CPD was meant to be Continuous Professional Development but it is not. I would term CPD now as Complete Prescribed Directive led by compliance bodies largerly and complied with by managers, who want to ensure their lists are annually ticked off. CPD has become a list of things to tick off rather than true development. 

    It neither shows competence nor growth. It definitely isn't development. Infact, CPD has become a race to find the cheapest provider rather than the most meaningful one.

    Learning on that other hand is different.
  • Learning is synonymous with gaining knowledge and skills than enhance your capability and competency.
  • Learning shows a growth pathway.
  • Learning is about bettering and evolving to become better on both a professional and personal level. Learning is self directed rather than prescribed and guided by a mentor or a peer.
  • Learning is personal - tapping into your own strengths and talents.
  • Learning ultimately gives you the skills that help you overcome your obstacles and turn them into opportunities.
