Dental nurses are a powerful part of the team. Their role in clinical care is important. This workshop i for dental nurses who truly want to upskill. This workshop will cover application of fluoride varnish, oral health assessment and education, impression taking and rubber dam application for the dental nurse. It will also include a hands on element.

Fluoride Varnish

Synopsis: In this session we will update the audience with best practice for dental nurses applying fluoride varnish

Aim: To update the audience with the current best practice for applying fluoride varnish

Learning Objectives: Revisit the modes of action of fluoride varnish.

Review the legal requirements of a Patient specific direction for the application of Fluoride varnish.

Review the application of fluoride varnish application, the indications and contra indications.

Learning Outcomes: Understand the modes of action of fluoride varnish.

Oral Health Assessment including Plaque Indices.

Synopsis: In this session we will review the oral health assessment that DHE nurses

Aim: To update the audience in current impression taking techniques and material available to them.

Learning Objectives:

Review what indices are and available methods.

Review the process of taking a dental plaque score (Plaque Control Score).

Review how we can use plaque indices in practice as dental nurses.

Be aware of any pre- / post- dental plaque indices advice to give the patient.

Discuss the write up appointment notes.

Review the importance of evidence-based dentistry.

Learning Outcomes:

Have a good understanding of what indices are.

Be able to explain why we use dental plaque indices.

Be aware of different plaque indices methods.

Be able to explain as a step-by-step guide the process of taking a dental plaque score.

Have a good understanding of how we can use plaque indices in practice as dental nurses.

Impression taking

Synopsis: In this session we will review the impression taking techniques and material that dental nurses can use.

Aim: To update the audience in current impression taking techniques and material that dental nurses can use.

Learning Objectives: Revisit the advantages and disadvantages of different materials and their uses.

Revise how to a take an accurate impression of the dentition.

Recognise and avoid errors when taking impressions.

Learning Outcomes:

Understand the advantages and disadvantages of different materials and their uses.

Understand how to a take an accurate impression of the dentition.

Will be able to recognise and avoid errors when taking impressions.

Rubber Dam application

Synopsis: In this session we will review the application of rubber dam techniques and equipment that dental nurses can use in the placement of rubber dam.

Aim: To update the audience on the application of rubber dam techniques and equipment that dental nurses can use in the placement of rubber dam.

Learning Objectives: Revisit the objectives of ideal isolation.

Review the advantages and disadvantages of rubber dam application.

Review the technique of placing rubber dam and practice using simulation.

Learning Outcomes: Understand the advantages and disadvantages of rubber dam application.

Be able to place rubber dam using simulation.

To be able to apply rubber dam confidently.
